It has been a year since our lovely Suzuki Mehran aka 'The Boss' discontinued and here's a quick glance as to why some of us miss this legendary car...
A bit of history..... really just a bit.
Suzuki Mehran is a car no Pakistani can ever forget. One of the cheapest cars ever produced in Pakistan. It was first named as Suzuki Alto from Japan which was sold from 1984-1988. And in 1989, it came to Pakistan. That's enough for the history and stuff I'll just jump into my favorite part and the title of the post.
Why the boss excels others?
It is also known as 'The Boss' and unofficially 'the national car of Pakistan'. Why is it so? because it is the best bet you'll ever get in this price range, and because of that, most of the car owners had it under their ownership. I know there are a lot of cons like not much comfort, not much of safety measures installed but hey, look at the price tag! There's no competition for it in the markets. So you have to settle for it. Anyways you can install all these things as an aftermarket at relatively cheap rates so yea, it's all good.
Exterior review:
As far as the exterior of 'The Boss' is concerned, it looks more like a 'box-shaped' rather than having a sleek design. I do not know why the automotive designers did not pay any attention to detail in this one. It was designed like this for the 1980's market and it was still being carried out till it got discontinued. It was all basic until it came for its most elite variant VXR where the major change was having color-matched bumpers and full wheel cover.
Interior review:
About the interior. Nothing special, just covered with grey-toned plastic pieces and 'not so comfy' seats. Lacking the majority of the essential features like steering adjustment, central locking, and rear seatbelts. Nothing was really 'automatic' in this car. Everything was manual like door locks, windows and seat adjustments, etc. Everything!. And here too, its most premium variant, the VXR, just had fabric seats and air conditioner.
Silver lining:
Okay, it was not all that bad! we should consider its positive side as well. And the first thing that comes in the list is its price. It was the cheapest production car of Pakistan till the time it got discontinued. And by the cheapest, I mean that it was relatively cheaper from other production cars in Pakistan. The car still was very expensive for the Pakistani markets because of its manual transmission and no particular safety features.
Old buddy, I would say:
Actually its the first car of almost every Pakistani car owner (including me) in which they learned how to drive. Its spare parts are quite cheap so just in case you bash it in a wall or another car, you can get its parts readily available in the market at cheap rates.
Fuel-Efficient:
For the fuel economy, this car can drag itself about 13-15 kilometers per litre. Not bad for a car, is it? It really is a fun thing to drive where you just insert the key, start the engine and take it anywhere you want. With such low fuel consumption and its compact design, you can take it anywhere you want.
Resale value:
The last part I would like to discuss is its resale value. And that thing is damn good when it comes to the boss. I mean this car sells like hotcakes. Everyones ready to pick it up even in a used condition. People do prefer buying this car because in case if they had to sell it in hard times, they can sell it quite quickly and easily, as compared to any other models.
Conclusion:
Well, I think this post got longer than I expected so I'd like to conclude here and give my verdict that 'The Boss' is a car worth buying, even if you are looking to buy a cheap second-hand vehicle. I mean look at the fuel consumption, low maintenance, and cheap spare parts. And for the missing things, you can install them as an aftermarket as they too are relatively cheap.
So what are your views on the one and only Suzuki Mehran aka 'The Boss'? Do let me know and thank you for sparing your time reading this article.
